Memory Station

Headquartered in an emblematic area of arrival and departure, the Memory Station is one of the main tourist attractions in Joinville (SC). In the building of the former railway station in the city, people from all over the country and the world continue to move – today, not to be transported to other places, but to be brought to the reality of other times. The building of the Memory Station, built in German-style, is one of the most remarkable in Brazil. The Joinville Railway Station was built in 1906, in the government of Afonso Pena, and was expanded in 1917. In 2008, Iphan (Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage) listed the station, classifying it as a monument of national architectural heritage.

The Ippuj (Institute for Urban Research and Planning of Joinville) and Fundação Cultural de Joinville, after years of architectural and historical research, developed the project of restoring the station. In April 2008, the Complex Railway Station was opened under the name Memory Station. The complex, since its inauguration, has received over 5000 visitors and promoted over 20 events, always with the goal of bringing
the community in its history. The Memory Station houses the whole area of recreation, culture and heritage education.

Apart from its permanent exhibits (Railway Memorial, Joinville Memorial and Rescue Archaeology Hall – produced by the Sambaqui
Museum), there is a room available for temporary or traveling exhibitions. Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Free admission. Tour groups must schedule in advance by phone or email. Surrounding the station there is a playground – in which parents can bring their children to play and walk around.
